Born in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand on November 7th 1996, Ella Marija Lani, Yelich-O’Connor, better known as Lorde, is a singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 2013 with the release of her worldwide hit single, Royals. Raised in Devonport, Auckland, Lorde became in interested in and passionate about performing from an incredibly early age. As a young teen, she signed a deal with Universal Music Group and began a creative partnership with record producer and songwriter Joel Little. Together, the pair crafted The Love Club EP which was released in 2012 when Lorde was just 16 years of age. This garnered her much success on a national level, with the EP reaching number two in the record charts in both her home of New Zealand and neighbouring country Australia. A year later in 2013, Lorde became an overnight sensation worldwide following the release of her debut single Royals. The crossover hit was such a success that Lorde became the youngest solo artist since 1987 to achieve a US number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 countdown. With media attention at an all-time high, Lorde’s debut album, 2013’s Pure Heroine received a positive reception from both critics and fans, producing a further top ten single, Team in New Zealand, Australia and the US. The following year, Lorde contributed a song and curated the entire soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. After a significant break from releasing music, Lorde returned to the limelight in 2017 with the release of her second studio album Melodrama. After a three-year hiatus, the launch single Green Light received strong praise and peaked number 1, 4 and 19 in the New Zealand, Australian and US charts respectively. Subsequent singles from the Melodrama album have since been released, including Perfect Places and Sober, all of which have been a success.
